My synchronization surprisingly hadn't decreased, and there was no message about a sync issue. It seemed I couldn't blame this on DIR; this was on me and how twisted I was inside. That was something I would obviously need to avoid thinking about for the foreseeable future.

I focused back on the Exiled. "You mentioned the Spider Queen. Can you see her inside me?"

The light woman shook her head. "Not quite. I can simply sense my kin. Why are you here, mortal?"

"I'm Blighted, currently level two in the Blight Manipulation skill, one element corrupted. I want to learn how to properly use the Blight against my enemies."

She took some time to reply. "That is impossible. Our punishment is related to using the Blight against those it shouldn't have been used against. We accepted this punishment as fair and have been waiting for its end for five thousand years already. We shall not renege on our honor now."

That made me frown. "That reminds me... Wasn't the Devourer the one who was holding the Fallen Gods captive? Why the hell are you all here? How can a mortal Warden, let alone someone as ordinary-seeming as Tharnya, keep you here to begin with?"

"That is a long story," she said and waved her hand, causing the light coming from the groove to dim. Above the groove, green and white lights of different shades and intensity created a scene in the air, a depiction of a white skeleton kneeling in front of a white humanoid, the latter's hand glowing green. Both were at least ten meters tall and dozens of meters high, making it easy for the entire clan to see it.

"The Soulsplitting Energy was developed by the God of Death to bring true death to liches," she said. "It would sever the soul's connection to the phylactery, meaning the body currently occupied by the lich would be the last one it ever inhabited."

The white humanoid placed their palm on the skeleton's skull. The skeleton looked upwards, opening its jaw wide as green light shot from its eye sockets and mouth. A knife appeared in the humanoid's other hand, and he plunged it into the skeleton's eye.

"It was a gift to mortals, meant to allow them to oppose such abominations. The Paladins of Death scoured battlefields in the hunt for liches whenever they were sighted. Their crusade was a boon and well received by mortals, earning the God of Death much praise."

The lights mixed and separated into a new image, showing dozens of people around a table raising a toast towards the one sitting at the head.

"But after hundreds of years, everything would change, for all war invites research into how to most efficiently destroy your enemies."

A few images appeared in succession, each depicting a nearly frozen moment in time. A man with a glass vial full of an unknown liquid, crystals floating around a ball of energy, someone being decapitated by a sword.
